Get to know me!
Hi! Kristen here and I am excited for you all to get to know me. Rarely do I ponder about who I am….my interests, passions and even my goals, instead of spending time thinking or even dreaming I just tend to be spontaneous. However, this has proven to be bad sometimes, so this time I am going to ask myself this…..Who am I? When I was in primary school I had an obsession with planning my entire life down to every detail. I would plan exactly what I’m going to eat every morning for breakfast, where I would go to college, when I would get married and even what I’d be doing when I retire. Could you believe that? At only 10 years old.
However, when I entered secondary school something traumatic in my life happened and after that dreadful day I made a promise to myself that I would live every day to the fullest and refrain from worrying, thinking and stressing about every detail of my life and it wasn’t long before I adopted a spontaneous lifestyle. It was through this new-found lifestyle where I really developed my love for the natural environment, because my ‘spontaneous’ activities heavily involved hiking to various breath-taking waterfalls, going to the beach or the river, travelling to various Caribbean islands such as Jamaica to partake in birdwatching activities and swimming with dolphins. What can I say? The environment managed to grab onto my heart and refuses to let go, not that I’m complaining.
I started to realize though as I went out more into the environment that there was a lot of pollution and degradation that took place and I was not pleased by this. I started researching in depth about pollution and eventually came across topics such as climate change, species extinction and so on. These topics peaked my interest and my first thought was: How can I be part of the solution? Here I am a few years later but ten times happier as a university student pursuing a BSc in Environmental Science and sustainable technology hoping that one day I have an enormous impact and a step in the right direction in healing our planet.
To be honest I guess I do spend time unconsciously researching and thinking about my interests and passions but only this time it doesn’t seem like a chore that consumes me. Apart from my love for the environment I enjoy eating lots of delicious foods, Chinese food being my favourite and nothing beats a waffle cone embracing two mouth-watering scoops of pralines and cream ice cream on a warm Sunday afternoon. I also fell in love with writing from watching the series ‘Jane the Virgin’ and even though I only composed one original piece called “All chapters come to an end” writing somewhat empowers me. I say this because even though I can’t control what goes on in my life all the time at least I can dictate every aspect and last detail of my stories.
